Skatepark Trends: Purple Is The New Black

I noticed two very prevalent trends at the skatepark today.

1. Everybody seems to be wearing purple … especially purple shoes.
2. Everybody uses shoelaces for belts.

The color purple can symbolise many things, but most often it symbolizes sexual frustration (draw your own inferences). AND, using things other than belts to keep your pants up makes it seem like you are homeless. Sure, they may not wear proper “belts”, but this does not mean that they are “homeless” or “too poor to wear proper clothes”. I’m just saying… was it free purple shoe day at the Salvation Army this weekend? And if they were giving away so many purple shoes, why couldn’t they give away free belts?

One possible reason that these fashionistas choose to wear shoe laces as clothing is because, as skaters know, shoe laces (in your shoes) often fray, and break in the middle of a session. This is very problematic. Shoes need to be functional as well as stylish… but mainly functional. So, if your lace brakes, you can just remove your “homeless persons belt” and fix your shoes. Amazing!
