As far as MTV’s realty shows go, they all suck except one. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve watched my fair share of Run’s House and every time the Real World is on, I watch it too, but that doesn’t mean they don’t suck. That is why it is so confusing to me that the Fantasy Factory is actually good. I know watching a show about a pro skater should always be good, but I’d have expected MTV to wreck it, just like they wrecked any desire I will ever have to visit Laguna Beach.
It’s not like the Fantasy Factory is so different from the other MTV shows. They all throw you into a manufactured situation and let you listen in. The difference is that Rob Dyrdek has some serious comedy inside his brain. He can make something as simple as riding a horse funny. In actuality, he wouldn’t need to do anything on his show other than sit in his office/skateboard throne chair and talk to his cousin Drama and It would still be the best 22 minutes of TV in the week.
…and I’m not fooled by all the other stuff that happens every week. I know it is all basically a big commercial to promote Rob’s businesses, but I’ll sit through hearing about Wild Grinderz toys, if that means I get to watch Rob walk into a crowded pool in the Bahamas, wearing a shark proof, chain mail suit, while Drama puts on a shark fin and pretends to attack him. I’ll even put up with Jeremy, the business manager’s whining every time Rob has an idea.
“Rob, you can’t ride a race horse”, “Rob, you can’t write IQ tests”(not sure he ever said that).
But, even Jeremy has his moments; I just can’t recall any off the top of my head.
Drama has a lot to do with why I enjoy the show so much. With chemistry between Rob and Drama coming from back in the Rob and Big days, Rob and Drama rival any onscreen leading couple. Take any interaction between the two and you have instant comedy. Throw in a celebrity here and there, a couple dogs running around, a rapping secretary, an American Gladiators tennis ball gun, a foam pit and a bit of skateboarding and then you have why the Fantasy Factory is so cool and Rob Dyrdek is basically the most dynamic man on TV these days.
I don’t think I’m alone on this one. One change from season 1 to season 2 is an eight foot, steel wall added to the security gate surrounding Dyrdek Enterprises, home of the Fantasy Factory. Looks like a few too many fans wanted to get a first hand glimpse inside the factory. Screw off kids, you have to see it on MTV.
By the way, is it weird that Music Television plays absolutely no music? Anyways…
